Pere Lachaise Cemetary

It was a gloomy Sunday so I thought I would spend it wandering the tombstones of Pere Lachaise Cemetery with it's famous occupants.  The cemetery was made famous by the moving of Paris's own Romeo and Julliet couple; Heloise and Abelard.  Their story was a bit rougher as Heloise fell in love with the much older Abelard and got pregnant.  Her father had Abelard castrated and they both ran off to live separate sad lives.   They finally got together in this lovely cemetery.

Of course, I had to find the famous tombs of Jim Morrison and Oscar Wilde as well.  Oscar Wilde's tomb was so unlike what I expected with an abstract flying figure with an oddly Assyrian looking face.  There were lipstick kisses all over the tome.  The poor guy apparently lost his testicles to vandals but now there is a glass enclosure to make sure that he doesn't get kissed to death...not that ol' Oscar would have minded :)

Oddest thing I saw in the cemetery was the tree next to Morrison's tomb.  It's been covered with chewing gum....no idea why but it's kinda gross.
