Mont St. Michel

Down the coast towards Brittany is an odd little island just off the beach where a priest soon to be named St. Aubert decided to build a church after having repeated dreams sent from Michael the archangel in the year 708.  Thus began a series of ever growing cathedrals and a small village.  Lots of history, wars, monks and pilgrims.

We came in the morning before it got busy.

Very cool!

We took a free tour at the abbey which was fantastic.  She told us all about the history as well as walking us through the place.  Very worthwhile.

Noon Mass!

The cool thing about this place is that when the tide comes in, it's cut off from the mainland.  Unfortunately, they had built a permanent causeway in the past to handle the tourists and are just now in the process of clearing away the land and putting in long above-water-walkway.  They have already moved the parking off site with shuttle buses and it will be great with the tides coming in out unobstructed when it's all finished.
